Fahmi Fadzil: 5G-advanced network as fast as 8Gbps will be used to livestream SUKMA 2024

Communications Ministry has announced that it plans to utilise 5G-Advance or 5.5G technology for live streaming during the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak this August. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, says that the live stream is through Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM)

According to Bernama, Fahmi said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had received applications from telecommunications companies eager to collaborate with RTM for the purpose. He added that the difference between 5G and 5.5G is that the latter can achieve speeds of over 8Gbps than just 1Gbps as the former.

The Communications Minister said that speed is particularly necessary to integrate certain live elements into the broadcast. Fahmi viewed this as an exciting technology and asserted that his Ministry would work towards implementing it for SUKMA.

When asked whether the technology would also be used in other SUKMA locations such as Sibu and Bintulu, Fahmi said the Ministry would first need to study some technical aspects and carry out a field study. As of now, the 5.5G network will be used in Kuching first.
