MIRI: The Sarawak football squad is gearing up to clinch the ‘mother of all medals’ at the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI Sarawak 2024, aiming to replicate their 1990 gold medal victory, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.
The initial gathering of the 30-member list for the Sukma football team took place in Miri, marking the start of their preparation journey for the games.
This event also served as the first official meeting by the Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO and Sarawak Sports Council director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan to assess the athletes’ needs and address any immediate concerns.
“As you are aware, the Sarawak team will participate in both men’s and women’s football events. This meeting was crucial to get closer to our athletes, understand their immediate needs, and address any issues they face,” he said during a media interview in Miri.
He disclosed that the group matches for Sukma football events would be held in Mukah. He acknowledged that the current team comprises entirely new players who have not previously competed in the games.
“We are focusing on rigorous training and match exposure to prepare these young players for Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024,” he said.
Despite the youth and inexperience of the new squad, Awang Putrayusrie remains optimistic about their potential due to their spirit, commitment, discipline, and clear direction towards achieving success in the games.
Sarawak has not won a gold medal in Sukma football since 1990, when the state first hosted the games in Kuching.
“With the comprehensive preparations by the Sarawak Sports Corporation and Sarawak Sports Council, including funding, equipment for training, and provision for domestic and international matches, everything is managed well to ensure there are no hitches in our preparations,” he added.-NST
